Settling in, starting points and transitions

Starting at a new setting is a huge event in the life of a child and their family.

It will be different for each child, some children may never have been away from their family before, others may have just arrived in this country and not speak English yet. Some children are naturally shy and others naturally outgoing.

Think about how you will help a child to settle in, will they come for a visit first? Will their parent stay with them for a little while and come back quite soon the first time or two? Will they be able to have a video call with you before they start? Or meet you in the park?

Setting in is an important time for information gathering.

Parents can provide a unique insight into their child, about their likes and dislikes, their family, their home language etc.
