Moving into temporary accommodation outside of the borough with an EHC plan

Moving into temporary accommodation outside of the borough can be challenging, especially when your child has an education, health and care plan (EHC plan). It requires careful planning and communication with relevant authorities.

By staying informed, actively participating in the review process and accessing local support services, you can help ensure continuity of care and education for your child during this period of transition.

There are some key considerations when moving to help ensure that you navigate the transition smoothly.

Notify the local authority

You will need to inform your current local authority, the new local authority that you are moving to, and your child’s current school about your change in address and the temporary nature of the move. You should reach out to the SEND team in both local authorities to ensure continuity of support and services for your child.

You can get in touch with the Lambeth SEND Team at sendsupport@lambeth.gov.uk

Review EHC plan

The new local authority must review your child's EHC plan within 4 to 6 weeks after your move to ensure it meets your child’s needs in the new area. You have the right to provide input during the review process.

Determine school placement

You will need to determine whether your child will attend a school within the temporary accommodation area or if you wish to retain the placement in your child's current school (if feasible).

Arrange transportation

You can discuss transportation options with both local authorities if your child needs to travel to their original school. You can contact the Lambeth transport team at transport@lambeth.gov.uk

Access health and social care services

It is important to ensure continuity of any health and social care services that your child receives, including therapy sessions or medical appointments.

Access local support

Research local support groups or charities that can provide assistance or information relevant to your child’s needs in the new area. Check the Local Offer website in the new area as it will contain details of any advice services.

Share documents

Ensure copies of your child’s EHC plan, medical records, and any assessments are shared between relevant authorities.

Stay informed

Keep updated with communications from both local authorities and your child’s school regarding the transition process and any changes to services.
