EarlyBird programme

EarlyBird autism parenting programme

EarlyBird is a 3 month course for parents and carers of children under 5 with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. It was developed by the National Autistic Society to empower, support and improve the lives of families with autistic children.

There are eight group training sessions with four home visits, where video feedback is used to help parents to combine theory with practice. The course doesn’t offer a cure but does help support children to reach their full potential.

What will we learn?

The National Autistic Society EarlyBird approach will help to:

  • understand a child’s autism
  • structure interactions to develop communication
  • develop strategies to pre-empt problem behaviours and/or manage them

Who can do the course?

EarlyBird is for families with children who are five years old or under with a diagnosis of ASD. There are 2 places for each family and up to six families in each group.

When and where are the sessions held?

The programme will run regularly in various locations across Lambeth. The group sessions are held locally on the same day each week and only adults attend.

Each session lasts two and a half hours. At the four home visits, the child will need to be present so that they can be filmed with a family member. There is a three-month follow-up session that you will need to attend.

Parents and carers will get an EarlyBird workbook and a certificate at the end of the programme.

If you’re interested, you need to come to a parent information event to collect an application form. Places are given on a ‘first come, first served' basis.

Who runs the course?

The programme is run by two local trainers who know all about ASD. The National Autistic Society's EarlyBird Centre trained them.
