Public Space Surveillance (PSS CCTV) in Lambeth

Borough wide Closed-circuit television (CCTV), also known as video Public Space Surveillance (PSS), is used to help prevent and detect street crimes like assaults, vehicle thefts, and drugs offences. We are responsible for the monitoring of CCTV in our town centres, open spaces, and housing estates.

CCTV monitoring services

The CCTV team monitor cameras at our CCTV control room. We are in radio communication with the Metropolitan Police 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Our cameras are used by Lambeth Council and external enforcement agencies, including the police. The control room is connected with local businesses and security guards who help manage local crime. The control room is operated in accordance with the law and security industry best practice.

We operate our CCTV systems in compliance with:

  • the Data Protection Act 2018
  • data protection regulation
  • the Freedom of Information Act 2000
  • the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012
  • the Information Commissioner’s Office CCTV Code of Practice
  • the Surveillance Camera Commissioner’s Code of Practice
  • our own Lambeth CCTV code of practice.

Privacy

London Borough of Lambeth Council is committed to the belief that everyone has the right to respect for their private life, family life, and home.

Lambeth CCTV Code of Practice, in conjunction with the operators manual, is intended to safeguard the integrity of Lambeth Councils CCTV Scheme, whilst ensuring the right to privacy is not breached.

Both have been updated to ensure compliance with current legislation.

Our Public Space Surveillance CCTV cameras are carefully positioned to not overlook any areas where you would expect privacy.

Recorded Data

Subject to the equipment functioning correctly, images from every camera will be recorded throughout every 24-hour period, onto hard drives securely maintained on site.

We keep CCTV images for up to 30 days. After this time they are automatically deleted.

Partnering with us

Do you have a CCTV system already installed? You can choose to allow us to monitor your cameras to respond to crime and antisocial behaviour. This already happens with our housing partners.

Housing associations, businesses, or resident groups often want CCTV in the areas they care about. If you have or would like a CCTV system, our contractors can connect it to our network if you have the funding.

Your organisation will benefit from a fully staffed control room with radio communication with the Metropolitan Police Service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

If you would like information, or wish to enquire about our installation or monitoring services, please email cctv@lambeth.gov.uk.
