Public Space Surveillance (PSS CCTV) in Lambeth

Borough wide Closed-circuit television (CCTV), also known as video Public Space Surveillance (PSS), is used to help prevent and detect street crimes like assaults, vehicle thefts, and drugs offences. We are responsible for the monitoring of CCTV in our town centres, open spaces, and housing estates.

Civil claims and third party requests

We can provide recordings from Public Space Surveillance (PSS) cameras for civil claims between individuals or companies. The most common requests are due to road traffic collisions.

If you have been the victim of a crime, been involved in a road traffic collision, or are an insurance company or legal representative, we are unable to accept Subject Access Requests in these instances as we would only be able to provide images of you and not of third parties.

If you have been the victim of a crime, or it is a crime-related incident you should report the matter to the police by calling either 999 in an emergency, or 101 in a non-emergency, to obtain a police incident / crime reference number. The police can make a request direct to us to view our footage, which will be provided to the investigating officer if available.

If you have been involved in a road traffic collision or incident without police involvement, then you should contact your insurance company or solicitor to request the footage under Schedule 2, Part 1(5) of the Data Protection Act 2018.

If you have been involved in a car collision or incident with police involvement, and you have a crime reference number, you should contact the police directly to request CCTV footage.

Obtaining camera images to assist with civil claims

Requests for recorded images to assist with civil claims should come from your insurance company or solicitor.

We have a legal duty to ensure images are not disclosed unlawfully under the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012.

If you have been involved in a road traffic incident or other civil matter your insurance company or solicitor should apply for recorded images under the Data Protection Act.

If you are a solicitor, insurer, or other agent requesting recorded images on behalf of your client, this can be made via the online form, in writing to Lambeth Council, or sent from a company email account to cctv@lambeth.gov.uk, giving the following information:

  1. Solicitor’s and / or insurer’s company name.
  2. Organisation / company address.
  3. Organisation / company incident reference number.
  4. The name of the client.
  5. Time, date and place of the incident.
  6. Vehicle details (vehicle registration mark - VRM, make, model, colour) of each vehicle involved.
  7. Description of incident.

We will respond by telling applicants if there are cameras that may have recorded the incident and we will provide a CCTV incident reference number.
