Public Space Surveillance (PSS CCTV) in Lambeth

Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV), also known as video Public Space Surveillance (PSS), is used across the borough, in our town centres, public spaces, and housing estates, to assist in preventing and detecting street crimes such as assaults, vehicle thefts, and drug-related offences.

CCTV monitoring services

Our CCTV team operates a 24/7 CCTV Control Centre, continuously monitoring cameras and staying in radio contact with the Metropolitan Police. We work year-round to support Lambeth Council and external enforcement agencies, including the police. The CCTV Control Centre collaborates with local businesses and security personnel to help manage crime in the area.

The CCTV Control Centre is operated in accordance with the law and security industry best practice. We ensure our CCTV systems comply with the following regulations:

  • Data Protection Act 2018
  • General Data Protection Regulations
  • Freedom of Information Act 2000
  • Protection of Freedoms Act 2012
  • Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) CCTV Code of Practice
  • Surveillance Camera Commissioner’s Code of Practice
  • Lambeth CCTV Code of Practice

Privacy

Lambeth Council upholds the belief that everyone is entitled to privacy in their personal and family lives, as well as their homes. Our Lambeth CCTV Code of Practice and operator manuals are designed to maintain the integrity of our CCTV scheme while ensuring individual privacy rights are respected. These documents have been updated to comply with current legislation.

Our public space CCTV cameras are strategically positioned to avoid overlooking areas where privacy is expected.

Recorded data

Provided the equipment is functioning correctly, footage from all cameras is recorded around the clock and stored securely on-site. We retain CCTV recordings for up to 30 days, after which they are automatically deleted..
