Dealing with condensation, damp and mould

Find out what you can do about condensation, damp and mould in your home.

Removing mould

When you’re removing mould, protect yourself by wearing goggles, long rubber gloves and a mask that covers your nose and mouth. Open the windows, but keep doors closed to prevent fungus spreading to other areas of the house.

Have a plastic bag ready to take away any soft furnishings, clothes and soft toys that are mouldy. Soft furnishings should be shampooed and clothes professionally dry cleaned.

Use an anti-mould spray that you can buy in most supermarkets and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Be careful not to brush mould, as this can release spores.

Some of the homes owned by the council have textured decorative coatings on the ceiling or walls which may contain asbestos. This is commonly known by the trade name ‘Artex’. If there is mould on textured decorative coatings, please do not clean this yourself but contact the repairs service on 020 7926 6000 to arrange for us to inspect this.

Further information is in the “Guide to textured decorative coatings (commonly known as Artex) in your home."
