Waste reduction

Preventing waste helps to reduce our environmental impact, conserve limited resources, and save money.

Furniture

If you’ve got some furniture that you no longer want or need, there are a few things you can do to avoid throwing it away.

You can upcycle it. A lick of paint or new fabric can bring an old piece of furniture back to life. You can rent DIY equipment from the Library of Things instead of having to buy the tools.

If your item is still in good condition, you can donate it to a local charity. Some charities, like Emmaus, provide a free collection service. Emmaus will collect most bulky household items that are in usable, sellable condition. They should be in working order, and/or have no stains, rips or marks, no rust and no parts missing. Sofas, mattresses, bed-bases and upholstered chairs must have a fire safety label.

You could also pass on furniture you no longer want or need to friends or family, or sell items online.

Items can be donated to be refurbished or reused at Smugglers Way Household Waste and Recycling Centre. If you have a car, you can drop repairable items in good cosmetic condition to Rework, at Smugglers Way Reuse Area (Bay B)

If your furniture is no longer in usable or working condition and you can transport it, take it to one of our Reuse and Recycling centres. If you cannot transport your broken, damaged or unusable items, you can book a bulky waste collection from your home.
