Apply for householder planning permission

Use this service for proposals to alter or enlarge a single house, including works and outbuildings within the curtilage (the property boundary) of a house.

Following on from Lambeth’s successful beta for lawful development certificates, we are pleased to launch the pilot of our new online submission tool for householder planning applications.

This service is a pilot, so you may encounter bugs and issues. We have provided a dedicated telephone line for applicants should you experience issues in using this new tool.

Before you apply

Check if you need planning permission.

You might need planning permission if you want to:

  • make a change to your house, like adding an extension or loft conversion or installing a satellite dish
  • build something new like an outbuilding or swimming pool
  • alter your house or the property walls and fences
  • change the vehicular or pedestrian access to your property

Apply for planning permission before work starts.

What you’ll need

Have as much detail to hand as possible. We’ll ask you questions about:

  • the property
  • your details
  • the project (including the materials you want to use).

For the existing property and the proposed works, you’ll always need to submit:

  • site plans
  • elevations
  • location plan
  • design and access statement.

Within the service you’ll have the option to create your own:

  • location plan
  • design and access statement

Depending on your project, you may also need to submit:

  • a heritage statement
  • a flood risk assessment
  • any other drawings and photographs that help us understand the project.

Check our Local Planning Application Requirements (PDF, 1.4MB) to find out what else you need to submit.

Payment

You’ll also need a credit or debit card to pay any planning fees, or the details of the person you want to ‘invite to pay’. The fee depends on the type of planning permission you’re applying for. If the project is about works to an existing home the fee is £258.

Disabled residents

If you’re making changes to your property to support a disabled resident, you may be exempt from paying fees. We’ll ask for supporting information for this in your application.

When you’ll get a decision

For a project about works to an existing home, you should get a response in 8 weeks.

The Digital Planning team won't be able to help with questions about planning decisions or about what projects might need permission.

You can find out more about Lambeth’s pre-application advice service to help you decide how to proceed.

If you would prefer not to try the online tool we’ve been developing, you can still apply for planning permission using the Planning Portal.
