Numbers of illegal graffiti commited

28 March 2022

Your request

I am a Crime Science Master student at UCL and I would like to base my dissertation project on the effectiveness of legal walls to reduce the number of illegal graffiti committed.

Especially, I would like to work on Leake street (legal graffiti area) in Lambeth, London. My purpose is to map the area surrounding Leake Street to help determine if it impacted the number of graffiti committed throughout the years.

Hence, I would really appreciate if you could grant me access to any database containing :

  • locations where graffiti were committed in Lambeth between 2007 and 2022
  • the number of graffiti occurrences discovered by city services or police officers, in Lambeth
  • any records of graffiti cleaning in the streets/public areas

I am planning to produce maps, hence crimes locations is a very important part of my research. Please let me know if you cannot provide such information

Our response

Grime Busters were removing graffiti in Lambeth before Serco took over the contract on 1 October 2021, therefore we are only able to provide information when contract started

There are no records of graffiti on Leake Street. However, we ran the report on surrounding roads and it showed that 26 cases were reported. Below is the list of the roads and how many graffiti cases were reported on each road. None of these cases were reported by police.

BAYLIS ROAD – 3

LOWER MARSH – 11

KENNINGTON ROAD – 5

CORAL STREET - 1

HERCULES ROAD – 3

LAMBETH HIGH STREET – 1

MCAULEY CLOSE – 1

UPPER MARSH – 1
