Foot operated bins / smart bins

Foot-operated bins

Your request

  • please can I make an FOI request for the Equality Impact assessment and any other emails regarding accessibility during the planning and decisions made before installing these pedal (foot operated) bins on Streatham high road, SW16.

I’m particularly interested in how they were expected to serve wheelchair users who, like      everyone else, would like to use street bins and recycling.

Our response

  • please find attached a copy of the Equalities Impact Assessment. Disability access was considered when procuring these smart bins. This influenced the decision to have the push type aperture rather than the handle type which nobody wants to touch.
  • It has been noticed that the tension of the aperture is a bit tight and this has been        brought to the attention of PEL, the manufacturers, who will be reducing this to make it easier to insert waste and recycling without using the foot peddle. This will be done retrospectively to all bins already installed during week commencing 25 July, and will take place before any new bins are installed.
