A fascination with circus history led circus ringmaster and actor Chris Barltrop to discover the exact location of the world’s first modern circus performances at Halfpenny Hatch, Lambeth (near today’s Waterloo Station) by Philip and Patty Astley in 1768. On Chris’s initiative, a Plaque now marks the spot. Further research led him to write his one-man play Audacious Mr Astley, bringing the innovative ‘rough diamond’ back to life to tell his own story. This event is hosted by Friends of Carnegie Library.
