It’s 1815 and the war is over. In Clapham, now a rural respite for the well-to-do of London, local surveyor Daniel Gould is drawing a detailed plan of the village. This unique resource – recently rediscovered in Lambeth Archives – documents the 200 or so prominent households clustered contentedly around the Common. Behind the genteel façade, however, were sharp divisions over religion, politics and enslavement. Who was Daniel Gould and what does his remarkable plan tells us about life at that time? Free. No need to book. Donations welcome.
