The Black Lives Matter protests during 2020 revived long-standing concerns about street names, statues and memorials with associations with the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. As part of Lambeth’s public consultation process on the implications for this within the borough, Lambeth Archives carried out detailed research on the subject. Now, through October as part of Black History Month, Lambeth Archives are offering an illustrated version of this presentation. It considers the early Black population in Lambeth in the 18th century, the iniquitous presence of the slave trade, the role of local anti-slavery campaigners, and what these legacies mean for us today in terms of the streets we walk down and the memorials we pass by.
