The show features a vibrant and diverse lineup of artists from Lambeth and beyond, and strives to explore themes of gender, sexuality, and society’s expectations from the very moment we learn to hold our first toys and play.

The show challenges traditional notions of masculinity and femininity, delving into how toys have been used to enforce gender roles and expectations. Through a diverse array of mediums: painting, sculpture, photography, and installations, the featured artists reflect on their personal experiences and broader cultural narratives, sparking dialogue about how play can shape, restrict, and liberate individual identities.

More on the curator:

Xavier White (b. 1993) is a Lambeth-based artist. His work blends activism with a sharp socio-political lens. By harnessing the semiotic power of childhood toys, White addresses complex topics like queer identity, toxic masculinity, and the male gaze. His art playfully transforms nostalgia into a platform for critical reflection on the past and present.
