Pollinator-friendly wildflower plants on Clapham Common

Working with ‘Wild Clapham’ a community-based environmental charity, over 9,000 square metres of Clapham Common is being converted from species-poor amenity grassland into a series of species-rich, pollinator-friendly wildflower meadows, to improve the biodiversity of this large and important open space.

A large area of grassland on the northern and western sides of Clapham Common were scraped free of topsoils to provide a nutrient-poor substrate, with the arisings used to build a network of raised mounds and bunds. These were then sown with a perennial native seed mixture which will provide a long-lasting flowering season on these meadows. The raised bunds are also being planted up with a mixture of native low-profile shrubs and herbs which will provide additional habitat for a wide range of invertebrates and additional cover for other wild animals.
