Windsor Grove Bee Road

Volunteers planting wild bulbs in a grass area on Windsor Grove

At Windsor Grove local volunteers from the Open Orchard Project and local residents worked together to plant nectar and pollen-rich spring and early summer bulbs around fruit trees in the community orchard. Bulbs included crocus, species daffodils and tulips and early summer alliums, which will offer nectar and pollen for several months, beneath the blossoming trees.

The grass in these areas will be left to grow longer, allowing leaves to die back and replenish bulbs for subsequent years’ flowering, and the longer areas of grass will also offer valuable habitat for invertebrates. As with other Bee Road sites, the longer grass will be cut and removed in late summer.

The Open Orchard Project is a community project working across West Norwood and nearby areas to plant and maintain fruit trees. To find out more and get involved in their regular volunteering activities, visit  https://openorchard.weebly.com/
