Planted verge on Norwood Road

An exciting de-paving and planting scheme has transformed the high street between Tulse Hill and West Norwood.

Funded by the Mayor of London’s Grow Back Greener Fund in 2021, Pavement Plants for People has - working with over 120 volunteers, including school groups, businesses and local residents - filled planters and newly de-paved flower beds with fruit trees, drought-tolerant perennials and wildlife friendly flowers. The scheme is led by the South London Botanic Institute (SLBI) in partnership with the local Station to Station Business Improvement District (BID) and Lambeth Council.

There are also new plantings in nearby Norwood Works, Lambeth’s largest industrial estate, as well as Knight’s Hill and Norwood High Street. Wild flowers to look out for in these planted areas include salvias, rosemary, cat mint, periwinkle and sage.

To find out more about the original project and how you can get involved, visit Pavement Plants Ready for People at the SLBI website.

In 2024, the Open Orchard Project, took on the maintenance of the planting.  They will be refreshing the planting over the year (some plants were lost due to extreme weather). They also aim to build a citizen gardening team to nurture the new plants and develop the greenery further. So, if you want to practice gardening (be it borders or planters) and connect with other local people, visit SE27 Citizen Gardeners on the Open Orchard website for more details
