Loughborough Park Bee Road

New Bee Roads meadow on mound next to Loughborough Park

At the suggestion of Friends of Loughborough Park, and with their help, we worked to create a traditional meadow here, on the corner of Moorland Road and Loughborough Park. We have converted a mound of underused green space into a thriving wildlife habitat.

Contractors stripped the old worn turf away in spring 2023 and replaced it with low-fertility soil then installed ‘low grow’ wildflower turf with a mix of 10% fine meadow grasses and 90% wildflowers. Pollen rich flowers you will find here include cats' ear, roman chamomile, daisy, fox and cubs, marjoram and thyme. In a slightly separate area, we worked with volunteers to plant a variety of European spring bulbs.

Like the other Bee Roads, this meadow will be left to flower for bees, butterflies, grasshoppers and other wildlife through spring and summer, then managed with an annual cut in late summer. Removing the clippings will help to further reduce fertility towards a more sustainable meadow.
