During Spring 2024 Kennington Green is being gradually transformed into a wildflower oasis, turning this prominent location into a colourful space that can enjoyed by wildlife pollinators, pedestrians and motorists alike.

600 metres of turf was removed from  part of the Green and a mixture of perennial and annual wildflowers seeded into a layer of low-fertility soil. The newly-established meadow will be cut at the end of the summer and the grass cuttings removed from site.  We are grateful for the contribution of students from Vauxhall Primary School, Henry Fawcett Primary School and Reay Primary School, who worked with local freelance community educators to sow wildflower seed into the site.

Wildflowers to look out for in the new meadow area will include in the first year cornfield annuals like poppies, cornflower, corn marigold, which are then followed by colourful perennial wildflower species like wild carrot, ox-eye daisy, field scabious, greater and lesser knapweeds, meadow cranesbill, tufted vetch, selfheal, and birds-foot trefoil.
