Durning Bee Roads

View of new wildflower meadow area on Durning Road in West Norwood

Separate sections of the two grass-covered roundabouts on Durning Road have been converted into pollen- and nectar-rich meadow hotspots. These new meadows were laid out by contractors and are based on a special ‘Treasure Chest’ wildflower turf which creates an instant and colourful impact for both wildlife and people found on the road and surrounding area.

The attached picture shows the wildflower-rich meadows following conversion, which provide food for not just pollinator species like butterflies and bees, but also for other important wildlife. Flowers to spot in the new meadows, which will gradually change and improve over time, include yarrow, lady’s bedstraw, betony, musk mallow, oregano, cowslip, ex-eye daisies and devil’s bit scabious.

Each autumn the new meadows will be cut and the cuttings taken away to keep them fresh and vibrant each spring. The remaining grass areas around them will be kept short to allow for local play and picnics.
